Business Travel Essentials
Packing for a business trip can be a headache, but it is important to get it right -after all your job and your career could depend upon it.
First of all try to gather information about the venue of the meetings, the hotel you will be staying in and general information about the place you’re going to. Ask your workmates who may have already made the trip what to expect. If you are going to be flying, and it is just a couple of days, try and pack everything into a carry-on case, this avoids long delays at check in and waiting for your bag at arrivals. If the trip is longer and you need to take a checked bag do always pack an emergency outfit into your carry-on bag, just in case your checked case doesn’t make it in time for that first meeting! If you have very little time between arriving and the first meeting take the outfit you are going to wear in a garment bag and ask the hostess to hang it up for you, to make sure it arrives in pristine condition.
As with holiday packing, do not to pack something which you would not wear to a business meeting at home, and pack with a color theme so that each item can be used together with various items to expand your outfit options.
For the guys it’s pretty easy, a couple of pairs of smart pants both of which combine with the same jacket and a variety of finely tailored shirts. Do remember that ties, socks and shoes are really important, they give you the opportunity to express your personality.
For the girls it’s a little trickier. Take a smart jacket that matches with one, and combines with both a pair of elegant trousers and at least 2 skirts. Take several blouses, which combine with the skirts and trousers, cocktail dress(es), evening dress(es), a swimsuit and comfortable clothes for in the hotel and going to the gym. Plan beforehand how you will combine each article to form distinct outfits for each part of every day.
Take a scarf or wrap which can transform an outfit into something quite different and is useful on the plane if it’s chilly. Pack 2-3 pairs of shoes, preferably with different heel heights to give you different looks. Select garments made from fabrics which do not crease easily, like polyester, but it might be worth taking a travel iron to be sure you look your best. When packing remember to place the heavier garments at the bottom, shoes at the sides, and lighter garments on top. Remember to put all toiletries into a sealed bag, pressure changes in the aircraft can cause things to leak, which could be a disaster. If possible use a good quality hard suitcase which will protect your clothes from unnecessary squashing under other luggage, and pack full, so that everything doesn’t shift around, but not so full that everything is under pressure.
Pack elegant and serious to make the best impression.
